News: Heavy Earthquake hits NORTH-EAST India

A strong earthquake measuring a magnitude of 6.7 has struck North-East India on Monday. The quake caused damage to many buildings and spread panic in the region. The epi-centre is found to be at Tamenglong district in Manipur, which occurred at a depth of 17 km below the ground.

According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), the earthquake which hit the region at 4.35 am, reported to have killed at least five persons along with 50 others injured.

Many buildings collapsed in Tamenglong region, while several others in Imphal developed cracks. People ran out of their homes looking for safe places. Nearly 20 persons were injured in Guwahati and other areas in Assam due to the earthquake.

All states in the North-East are categorized under zone V in India’s Seismological map and considered to be highly vulnerable. According to the Regional Seismological Centre, the earthquake for is one of the biggest in recent times and was felt in the entire North-east region.
